DuPont State Forest: Waterfalling!!!

For our first weekend with both of us in South Carolina, we decided to see some waterfalls. Now, the book of South Carolina falls I picked up at Caesar's Head has like 150 falls in it. So, you can see how it might be difficult to decide which to see first! Somehow, though, we ended up in NORTH Carolina, at some place not even in the book! Still not sure how that happened... Anyway, we went to DuPont State Forest, in Herdersonville, NC. In Transylvania County. Not just for vampires anymore... Anyway, you can see on the map where it is. Spartanburg County is the next county to the East of Greenville County, sir-not-appearing on this map. It was about 1 1/2 hours from home, if you're wondering.

We have coined a new term by the way. Waterfalling. This in no way indicates FALLING in any way, shape, or form. Although we did have one minor injury (below).





DuPont State Forest (www.dupontforest.com) contains 10,268 acres of forest, 80 miles of trails (open for horses, Mom!!!) and contains wild trout streams for fishing. There are 3 major waterfalls, somewhat of a hike from the trailhead. People swim in them and stuff, which is wierd. The first one is Hooker Falls:

And the third one is High Falls. Because it's high. That's a covered bridge way at the top of it. At all these falls, you can hike to the bottom to wade or fish, or if you're psycho, you can just kayak down them all, like 3 guys did today. Also, a wedding was here, and the wedding party walked to all these falls, in matching green rubber boots, for pictures.




PS, there are signs all over that say not to walk on the hazardous slippery rocks, but who pays attention to that nonsense anyway??? Our one casualty: Blair's leg.


And there you have it, our first trip waterfalling. It is very addictive, let me assure you. On that note, in our guidebook, it attributes this addictive quality to the physics of ionized air, and the elevated brain serotonin levels it causes. Much like prozac. So next time you need some prozac, come visit, and we'll take you waterfalling.
